Newborn Diaper Bag

Ah, the diaper bag.  It’s pretty much a necessity for any mom with young kids, especially a newborn!
About a year or so ago I did a post on our toddler’s diaper bag {click here to see it}.  Well, now that Rowen is three, we don’t really carry a diaper bag for her anymore.  Instead, we just carry one for Wyatt!  So I thought I’d give you a peek at my diaper bag, as well as talk about some of my favorite baby products I keep inside!

OK, so I cannot even tell you how many times I get stopped by random strangers when out in public with this bag.  Most of the people that comment on it are other moms, but I’ve even had some teenage girls tell me “omg, your diaper bag is so cute”.  HA!  Needless to say, I LOVE this bag.

We initially bought it because my husband refused to carry anything that looked like a purse.  We saw this bag when we were registering (back before Rowen was born).  He liked the pattern and knew that if anyone saw him with it in public; it instantly meant “hey, I’ve got a kid, not a man purse”, HA!

The bag was a bit on the expensive side, but it’s totally worth it as it has seven pockets, is extra roomy and comes with a changing pad, three accessory pouches (perfect for holding extra cash, keys, cell phone, even dirty clothes) a pacifier pouch and a cooler – all of which we use!

Now on to the goods inside…

Diapering:

{Diapers} – We use Pampers for the first 4-5 months then switch to Target brand.  I’ve heard a good rule of thumb is to pack one diaper for every hour you are out and about!

{Huggies Clutch 'n Clean Wipes} - I am in love with Huggies wipes and their refillable Clutch case!  It’s so cute and VERY handy!

{Wet Ones} – I use these to wipe of my own hands and to wipe down the changing mat after using it!

{Desitin} – We use it at every changing

{Munchkin Pacifier Wipes} – Not really a diaper item, but for when that pesky pacifier falls to the ground (which is constantly).

Feeding:

{Dr. Brown’s Bottles} – Love these, they are great for gassy/reflux babies

{Tommee Tippee Feeding Bibs} – Awesome!  Keeps clothes clean and keeps milk from getting under baby’s chin!

{Munchkin Formula Dispenser} – I use these anytime I know that I will need formula on the go!  Love that each compartment in the container holds up to three feeds worth for us right now!

Comfort Items:

{Summer SwaddleMe}:  Wyatt sleeps in these every night and they tend to soothe him when he’s really cranky.  He loves them.

{Avent Pacifiers}:  Also another comfort item for Wyatt.  I don’t plan on giving him one past 6 months, but for now we’ll keep it!

Spare Blanket:  Perfect for chilly days, stroller rides or as a cover while baby is in the car seat!

{Extra Clothes}:  You never know when you need these!  I particularly like this cute onesie, which is currently in the bag!

I know the contents of this bag will keep changing as he grows, but for now this is what is working for us!

Toddler Diaper Bag

I have quite a few friends and co-workers expecting babies in the next few months, many of whom have asked the question, “What do you carry around in you daughter’s diaper bag?”  So, today I thought it would be fun to share it...

The bag we use isn't a true diaper bag - instead it’s a small backpack.  When Rowen was younger I carried a legit diaper bag, but now that she is older and needs less stuff, we've moved to something smaller.  The idea is that she will eventually take it with her to preschool, but for now it functions as a diaper bag and holds just enough to get us through a day of errands, a play date, or a family outing!

Here is a quick list of what’s in this adorable little bag:

Diapers - Huge Up & Up fan
Extra Outfit - You just never know
Flushable Wipes - Easy peasy
Sun Screen - A summer must

Disposable Bibs - Love them
Take 'N Toss Sippy Cup - Best cups ever
Take 'N Toss Fork and Spoon - Who cares if you accidentally leave it at the restaurant
Disposable Placemats - No more nasty table germs
Snacks - GoGo SqueeZ are a favorite in our house

Book - Rowen is a book worm
Crayola Play Pack - Perfect for on the go entertainment

What's the best part about this bag you ask?  How about the fact that Rowen loves to carry it, which means I don't have to! :)

My 10 Favorite New-Mom Must-Have Items

Happy hump day!  I cannot believe the work week is already half over!  Crazy!

Tonight's blog topic centers around babies and all of their stuff.  I never realized just how much stuff a baby needs until I became a parent!  Over on my other blog {sorry for the shameless plug}, I posted about an adorable baby shower invitation I recently designed.  In keeping with the baby theme on this blog,  I thought I’d go ahead share with you my 10 Favorite New-Mom Must-Have items!  I happen to have quite a few friends expecting babies in the next six months so the timing for this post only seemed appropriate!

Here we go…

1.  Chicco Keyfit 30 Travel System – This car seat/stroller combo is perfect for everyday use with an infant!  The car seat snaps right into the stroller – no need to take baby in and out of the car seat!  Genius!

2Boon Grass Countertop Drying Rack – I absolutely love this product!  And even though my daughter is pushing 20 months, we still use it daily!  It was perfect for bottles and binkies during the newborn stage, and now works well for toddler necessities like sippy cups, spoons, etc!

3. LeSport Sac Ryan Diaper Bag (Zoo print) – This bag is awesome!  It’s roomy with lots of pockets to fit everything imaginable for baby, plus it’s adorable!  I’ve received tons of compliments on it!  It’s a little bit spendy, but totally worth it!

4. Phillips Avent Bottles - These were the only brand of bottles I used for my daughter.  They never leaked and came in a variety of sizes, perfect as baby grows!

5.  NoseFrida – OK, I will admit it, when I first saw this product I was all like, “sick, no way in heck am I sucking up my kid's snot through this thing”.  Then, my daughter caught her first, bad cold and I was all like, “heck yes I’ll do it, anything to get some sleep!”.  This little invention not only works, but it’s the best snot sucker we’ve found to date!  I highly recommend it!

6. Fisher Price Rock ‘n Play Sleeper –  If you have an infant with reflux I HIGHLY recommend this!  My daughter was diagnosed with acid reflux within the first month she was born.  The doctor recommended we sleep her in an upright position at night to prevent from choking and grunting after feedings.  Our first attempt at this was the car seat, which didn’t work.  Then we found the Rock n Play, and it worked wonders!  She was finally comfortable at night and we were finally getting some sleep!  She was a Rock ‘n Play baby until five months when we finally transitioned to the crib!

7.  Video Monitor –Being able to actually see and hear your baby on a monitor at all times while he/she is in another room is a huge lifesaver.  Not sure how parents survived without this!

8.   Crane Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier – This is a great little humidifier and well worth the money for its functionality.  We turn this on every night before our daughter goes to bed!  Its cute appearance is an added bonus, too!

9. Diaper Genie Elite –  A must have for any parent with a little one in diapers!  It handles odors like a dream - once a dirty diaper goes in I never have to smell it again!

10. Tommee Tippe Milk Feeding Bibs – If you have a spitty baby these bibs are great!  They’re super absorbent and the collar around the neck is awesome for bottle fed babies and drooling!

There you have it,  those are my 10 Favorite!  What were your favorites?  Feel free to comment below!

Have a great night!

Fun at the Iowa State Fair

August in Iowa means one thing and one thing only...the Iowa State Fair!

The Iowa State Fair is an annual fair held in Des Moines over an 11 day period and just so happens to be one of the largest state fairs in the country and is on the list of 1000 places to see before you die...pretty cool!

I've been going to the fair every year since I was a kid and I knew that I wanted Rowen to have the same experience, so this past Saturday morning we grabbed the diaper bag, loaded the stroller in the car and headed out!

The first thing we did upon arrival was hightail it to the first corn dog stand we could find! You see, the Iowa State fair is famous for its plethora of deep fried goodness on a stick and I was not about to miss out...

Thank goodness I ran six miles earlier that morning because I downed two of these puppies in just a matter of minutes...so good!

Rowen even got in on the action.  At first, she wasn't quite sure what to think, but once had it figured out, she went straight to town...

...like mother like daughter, I guess!

After our bellies were full we headed to see everything the Iowa State Fair has to offer including...

A visit to see the animals...

A quick peek at the biggest bull you'll ever see...

A stroll through the Midway....

A trip through the Agriculture Building to see some award winning produce...

and a ride on the Sky Glider...

Two hours and a lot of walking later, we made a pit stop for THESE bad boys...Fried Oreos!  Enough said, right?

And finally, no trip to the Iowa Sate Fair would be complete without a visit to the Butter Cow!  Yes, I said butter cow - a life-size cow carved out of butter, you'd be a fool to miss it!

Five and a half hours later my legs had had enough walking, but it was totally worth it!  If you're one of those people who have never been to Iowa and think that all the state has to offer is corn, you're dead wrong! The Iowa State Fair brings in people from all over the country and is a great way to spend time with family!  I highly recommend you add it to you're bucket list, you'll be glad you did!

Weekend Wrap-up

It's Sunday again.  That means weekend wrap up!  It was a pretty normal weekend for us, complete with frigid cold temps and more snow - apparently mother nature hates us.

Saturday morning I woke up bright and early to take my car in for an oil change, waited close to an hour and then made the rounds to accomplish my normal weekend errands.

When I came home, Ryan was busy cooking brunch!

The mess left over motivated me to knock off the top three cleaning items on my list: deep cleaning the kitchen, wood floors {the biggest pain ever}, and bathrooms.

I try to deep clean at least once month and I always feel ten times better when done!

Much of the afternoon was then spent doing this...

and this...

Until it was time to go!  Where?  Rowen had slumber party plans with my parents and we had a baby free night!  Yes!

We packed her a bag, put on our Saturday best {aka my sweatpants}, and headed out the door.

After making a pit stop to say goodbye to baby girl, Ryan and I headed to my sister's house for wings, pizza and college basketball. My brother-in-law, Shawn has a smoker and happily obliged to make us wings. So good!

The boys got settled on the couch in front of the TV while my sister and I made ourselves comfy in the kitchen making these!

We sort of randomly threw this little cocktail together, not realizing how devilishly delicious it would taste!

Then proceeded to craft a diaper cake for a baby shower my sister was attending later in the week...

...not bad for a few drinks in + our first time!

We ended the night at 1:30am - an hour Ryan and I haven't seen in a loooooong time!

Today {Sunday} we met back up with my parents for lunch and then headed home with an exhausted baby.

It's early to bed for her and a night of Oscar watching for me!

Have a good night!
